Rhetoric Over Substance in the Shit Holes of the World

I’m going to go out on a limb and suggest that the use of the phrase ‘shit hole’ in reference to several foreign countries, such as Haiti, wasn’t very smart, but at the same time any of us who are honest will have to admit that Haiti is, in fact, a shit hole right now, and has been since Papa Doc Duvalier took it over, under the iron grip of the Tonton Macoute.  I am also going to go out on a limb and suggest that while I reject the notion that Norway is the richest, or in any way the best, nation on Earth, I truly believe that most rational people who look at Norway and Haiti can find many differences between those countries, in terms of literacy rates, average levels of work skills, crime rates, and other factors, that would seem to make Norway a more attractive destination, overall, than is Haiti.  Donald Trump, poor as his word choices may have been, was not being racist in suggesting that we might try to get more immigrants from nations where the average citizen has something to contribute to our society, and fewer from nations where the average citizen cannot read.

Democrats do not want to engage in a rational discussion about immigration, in terms of why we want immigrants, and which countries are more apt to have people who can contribute more to our society.  Such a discussion would expose what Richard Lamm (a liberal Democrat, and the former Governor of Colorado) suggested was the Democrat agenda, in a speech he titled, ‘My Plan to Destroy America‘.  That link is to a Snopes article that shows Lamm’s speech and also calls my characterization of it ‘true’.  Here is another link where you can hear Governor Lamm give this speech.  This is a real speech, given by a liberal Democrat, outlining how the current Democrat platform on immigration is designed to destroy our nation.  Lamm’s speech is a rare case of a Democrat, who thought his words would never go public, being honest, and it should scare the hell out of you.

The bottom line is that Richard Lamm told us, in 2005, that all of the very things the Democrat Party has been doing with regard to immigration, are designed to destroy America.  Multiculturalism is not designed to make us stronger, but to tear us apart.  Bilingualism was not designed to make us stronger, but to tear us apart.  The celebration of diversity over unity was not designed to make us stronger, but to tear us apart.  We pull immigrants primarily from nations where few people are educated not to make our nation stronger, but to weaken it.  Dual-citizenship is designed to weaken national commitments to our nation, and to tear us apart.  And, perhaps most importantly, it is imperative to the Democrat platform that Americans not discuss these matters rationally, as if we do, the Democrat intent will be exposed.  As such, political correctness is designed not to enlighten us, but to blind us from truth.  Richard Lamm, who I remind you was a liberal Democrat Governor of Colorado, spelled it out piece by piece, and point by point.  Democrats have been using his plan – titled ‘My Plan to Destroy America’ – ever since.

Why was it racist to call Haiti a ‘shit hole’?  Simple. The word ‘racist’ resonates with a large number of Americans in such a way as to prevent a rational discussion from even taking place.  The word ‘racist,’ as used in this context, is purely rhetorical, designed to avoid more substantive discussion.

Donald Trump did not make Haiti a shit hole.  Papa Doc Duvalier did that.  A terrible earthquake destroyed whatever progress Haiti had made post-Duvalier rule, and then the Clinton Foundation ensured that Haiti did not recover from the earthquake.

I debated a liberal yesterday on whether or not Haiti was a shit hole, when compared to Norway, and when I confronted the liberal with the differences in wealth, in literacy rates, in crime rates, in levels of work skills, and in other substantive areas where it should be perfectly rational to view Norway as better than Haiti, the liberal actually said that the bottom line is that I am saying Norway is better because Norway is white.  There’s a little projection in that line of thought, however, for Norway really is better than Haiti in all of those areas, and by the widest of margins.  I never suggested that race was the reason Norway is better than Haiti, and in fact I do not believe race has anything to do with it.  My liberal opponent was the one who believed that the reason Norway scores so much better in so many metrics, than does Haiti, is because of race.  The great irony of the liberal position is that it is based on the belief that if nations like Haiti were white, they’d be rich – or in other words, that people of color are incapable of building or running viable nations.  I could not get my liberal opponent to come right out and own his racism, but it was very interesting watching him skirt around the fact that white supremacy was at the very heart of every assumption his arguments were based on.  Within our own country, for example, how can someone say that math is racist without assuming that people of color are too dumb to do math?  Let me be blunt – nobody who believes that people of color are just as competent as are white people would ever call math racist, just as anyone who is not racist would blame the Duvalier’s and a host of other things for Haiti being a shit hole, rather than blaming race.

How about a discussion on how we can fix Haiti, or more to the point, how we can assist Haiti in fixing itself?  It’s not rocket science.  Haiti needs schools – and schools that teach math rather than schools that teach that math is racist.  Haiti needs to make its populace literate.  Haiti needs an economy, which means that it needs businesses, which in turn require foreign investment.  Anyone with a business degree can tell you what kinds of things encourage foreign investment.  There is no mystery involved in making Haiti a better place; we know how to do that.  And yet Haiti is still a shit hole, not because Donald Trump is racist, but because it is not politically expedient to do the kinds of things that would actually turn Haiti around.  Rather than improve Haiti, Democrats call those who recognize that Haiti could be fixed, racist.  And in the meantime, Haitians die.

Do you know what else holds Haiti back?  We encourage Haitians to immigrate to the United States, and many of those who can, do.  The Haitians with the most ability to immigrate to the United States are also, by and large, the best and the brightest in Haiti.  As such, in the interest of helping the Haitian people, we are removing from Haiti the very people who are in the best position to improve Haiti.  We should of course not turn people away from our shores when they want to come to our nation and become Americans, but we should also help those who want to see Haiti improve make real change within their own country.

Liberals, of course, do not want to see improvement.  Richard Lamm has told us as much.  The true liberal goal is to destroy.

  1. I think that your description of the situation in Haiti is right on the money. Leftists want to attack Trump over anything at all and they found it. Mostly I just ridicule leftists, serious discussion is a waste of time. Keep writing Wallace, I enjoy it.

  2. Mr. Garnau:

Have you considered the possibility that Mr. Trump is telling the truth and Mr. Durbin is lying through his teeth (as he is wont to do)? Mr. Trump and many others who were there state that he never said “shithole” and Dick Durbin has a history of making up crap when he is losing.

Please don’t fall into the liberal trap of assuming something reported actually happened. How many retractions of front page lies are relegated to page 20?

    1. I do not know whether Trump called those countries ‘shit holes’ or not, but if he did, while the phrase is crass, it is not inaccurate.

Cant the same can be said about Mexico and all other countries whose citizens prefer America over their own country?
